Do Ekodome kits come with a foundation or flooring? What are the best options?

Ekodome® kits do not include foundation or flooring components.

Our domes are used for a wide range of projects: greenhouses, eco domes, tiny homes, classrooms, and event spaces, each with different requirements. For this reason, we leave the foundation and flooring up to you so you can customize it to your landscape, climate, and building needs.

Foundation Requirements & Recommendations

Ekodomes are heavy-duty structures, with just the frame weighing over 1,500 lbs, and that’s before you add panels, furniture, or equipment. For that reason, your dome must sit on a level, stable foundation that complies with local building codes.

Important: We do not provide foundations and recommend working with a local contractor to design a code-compliant base tailored to your site.

Here are three popular options:

1. Concrete Pad

  • Most stable and durable option

  • Best for permanent installations and heavy use

  • Long-lasting, weatherproof, and low-maintenance

  • Ideal for insulated domes or year-round use

2. Wooden Deck

  • Offers design flexibility and easy expansion

  • Aesthetic and eco-friendly

  • Works well for temporary or semi-permanent domes

  • Must be properly reinforced for the dome’s weight

3. Level Soil Base

  • Natural and cost-effective

  • Best for greenhouse or seasonal domes

  • Minimal prep, but less support for heavier loads

  • Not recommended for climates with high winds or heavy rain

Flooring Options for Your Ekodome

While we don't provide flooring, there are several practical and creative flooring solutions to suit your style, comfort, and climate:

DIY Flooring Solutions

Customize your dome interior with sustainable, budget-friendly materials like:

  • Bamboo: Durable, moisture-resistant, and eco-conscious

  • Cork: Soft, insulating, and resilient: great for cozy spaces

  • Reclaimed Wood: Rustic aesthetic with environmental benefits

These materials are perfect for eco domes, living spaces, or off-grid setups.

Modular Flooring Systems

Interlocking tiles made from rubber, foam, or PVC offer flexibility and fast installation:

  • Rubber tiles: Durable and shock-absorbing: ideal for workspaces

  • Foam tiles: Soft and insulated: great for play areas or offices

  • PVC tiles: Moisture-resistant and low-maintenance: ideal for kitchens or bathrooms

Modular floors are easy to clean, reconfigure, and install: a favorite for DIY dome builders.

Carpeting

For added insulation and comfort, carpet is a great choice:

  • Natural fiber options like wool or sisal offer warmth and eco-friendly appeal

  • Helps retain heat and reduce noise

  • Great for domes used as homes, studios, or offices

Radiant Floor Heating

If you're building in a cold climate, consider radiant floor heating beneath your floor system:

  • Uses water pipes or electric coils under the floor

  • Evenly distributes heat throughout the dome

  • Maximizes usable space by eliminating the need for radiators or vents

  • Highly energy-efficient and ideal for insulated PRO Series domes
