How do I add a chimney, mini-split, or HVAC system to my ekodome?

Climate Control & Ventilation Customizations for Geodesic Dome Living

You can install a chimney, mini-split, or other HVAC systems in your Ekodome®, as long as they’re planned and installed correctly.

Whether you’re building a dome house, eco-dome, or greenhouse home, proper airflow and temperature control are key to year-round comfort.

Below is a breakdown of how to safely and effectively integrate these systems into your geodesic dome kit:

Chimney Flue Integration

You can add a chimney flue to your Ekodome by sending us the exact dimensions and preferred location of the flue. We’ll pre-cut a hole into the appropriate panel before shipping.

We recommend choosing a flue that exits through the side wall rather than the ceiling. This gives you more flexibility when selecting your dome size and simplifies both installation and sealing.

Installing a Mini-Split System

Mini-splits are a popular and efficient way to heat and cool your dome—especially when used with the Pro Series.

What to know:

  • Indoor Unit Placement:
Mount on a custom interior frame or freestanding module. Positioning near the upper section helps with circulation.

  • Routing Wires & Lines:
Avoid drilling into panels. Instead, route refrigerant lines and wiring along the dome’s struts using conduit, or underneath the deck/foundation to keep the setup clean and weather-protected.

  • Sealing Tips:
Seal conduit entry points at the platform/foundation level with foam insulation or weatherproof sealant to prevent air or water leaks.

  • Outdoor Unit Placement:
Place on a stable, ventilated platform just outside the dome, away from snow accumulation or debris.

HVAC Systems in Ekodomes

  • Recommended For: Pro Series domes

  • Why: They offer high-performance insulation and are built for year-round living in extreme climates.

HVAC Options for Pro Series Domes:

  • Mini-splits

  • Ducted floor systems

  • Radiant in-floor heating

  • Electric baseboard heaters

Work with a licensed HVAC contractor to determine the best solution based on your climate, use case, and layout preferences.

Climate Control in Original Series Domes

For Original Series domes (non-insulated), full HVAC systems are not recommended. Instead, we suggest:

  • Passive ventilation

  • Fans or small plug-in heaters

  • Thermal mass elements (e.g., water barrels or stone flooring)

These options are ideal for greenhouse domes, seasonal spaces, or mild climates.
