How do I add a chimney, mini-split, or HVAC system to my Ekodome?
A guide to heating and cooling your dome safely using standard building practices.
You can add heating and cooling systems to your Ekodome just like you would with any small cabin or structure, but all HVAC, ventilation, and chimney work must be done by a licensed professional. Ekodome does not cut openings in panels or install HVAC systems, but our solid panels can be modified on-site by your installer as needed.
Mini-Split Systems
Mini-splits are the most common choice for glamping units and full-time living.
How it works:
• your HVAC technician cuts the required opening in one of the solid panels
• the indoor unit mounts on an interior wall or support panel
• the outdoor condenser sits outside like a normal installation
• refrigerant and electrical lines run through a clean opening created by your installer
Mini-splits work extremely well with SIP or HPL panels because of their insulation and rigidity.
Wood Stoves & Chimneys
If you plan to install a wood stove or fireplace:
• your installer cuts the chimney opening in one of the solid panels
• a certified insulated chimney kit is used
• flashing and sealants are applied around the penetration
• all work must comply with local fire safety and clearance codes
We recommend choosing a lower or mid-height panel for chimney placement to maintain proper clearances.
HVAC Ducting
For full HVAC systems with ductwork:
• choose a SIP or HPL panel for the penetration
• your HVAC contractor will cut the opening for vents or ducts
• flexible or rigid ducts are routed like a typical small cabin installation
• sealing and insulation around the penetration must be done professionally
What You Should Not Do
To ensure safety and maintain structural integrity, avoid:
• cutting through aluminum frame profiles
• modifying hubs or connectors
• placing vents in glass or polycarbonate panels
• installing any heat source without a licensed technician
All penetrations must be made only in solid SIP or HPL panels.
Important Notes for Safety & Warranty
• All HVAC, chimney, and stove installations must follow local code.
• Only a licensed professional should cut panel openings.
• Ekodome does not provide engineering for HVAC systems or stove installations.
• Improper installations can cause leaks or safety hazards.
