Is it really DIY? How easy is it to assemble an Ekodome, and what tools do I need?

Everything You Need to Know About Assembling Your Ekodome Geodesic Dome Kit

Yes, Ekodome® kits are designed for self-assembly and are ideal for experienced DIYers or small teams who enjoy hands-on building projects. You don’t need to hire a contractor to assemble the dome frame and panels, but you should feel comfortable using basic tools, climbing ladders, and handling large materials.

What’s Included in an Ekodome Kit?

Every geodesic dome kit comes fully equipped with:

  • Extruded aluminum struts for the frame

  • Cast aluminum hubs to connect struts into a geodesic pattern

  • Your choice of cover panels:

    • High-pressure laminate (HPL) with or without PIR insulation

    • Twinwall or solid polycarbonate

    • Double-pane glass (for PRO Series)

  • All required bolts, nuts, hubcaps, seals, and gaskets

How Does Assembly Work?

Assembly is intuitive with our step-by-step printed manual and video tutorials. Here's an overview of the process:

  1. Build the aluminum frame from the ground up using hubs and struts

  2. Secure frame connections with black oxide bolts and nyloc nuts

  3. Install cover panels from the top down using self-tapping screws

  4. Seal joints with weather gaskets and hubcaps

  5. Add the door, windows, vents, or tunnel modules

  6. Finish with interior customization once the dome is fully enclosed

What Tools Will I Need?

You won’t need specialized tools—just a few common ones:

  • Cordless electric driver (with torque settings)

  • Allen (hex) keys and socket set

  • Rubber mallet

  • Gloves, safety glasses, and basic safety gear

  • Hammer and crowbar (to open shipping crates)

  • Ladder or scaffolding – varies by dome size

  • Glass suction cups (recommended if installing glass panels)

Ladder & Equipment Requirements by Dome Size:

  • Luna (16 ft): 6-ft A-frame ladder

  • Terra (22 ft): 12-ft ladder + scaffolding

  • Cosmos (29 ft): 18-ft ladder + scaffolding

  • Stellar (30 ft): 12–18 ft ladder + scaffolding

How Long Does It Take to Assemble?

  • Small domes: As little as half a day with a team of 2–3

  • Larger domes: Typically take 1–2 full days

  • Dismantling time: Around 25% of assembly time

Assembly time depends on your team size, experience level, and the specific dome model. Many customers assemble their Ekodome over a weekend.

What About Foundation & Anchoring?

While dome assembly is DIY-friendly, foundation work and anchoring should be done by a local contractor, especially if:

  • You’re in an area with extreme weather

  • Your dome will be permanent or used for accommodation

  • You need to meet local code requirements
