How do I add solar panels to my Ekodome?
A simple guide to the options available and what you should keep in mind when planning a solar setup for your dome.
You can use solar power with an Ekodome, but the best way to do it is by installing the panels on a separate ground-mounted or roof-mounted system, not directly on the dome structure. This protects both your panels and your dome, and gives you much better sun exposure and efficiency.
Here’s what you need to know.
1. Ground-Mounted Solar Panels (Recommended)
This is the most common and practical option for dome sites.
Why it works best:
• maximizes sun angle and efficiency
• easy to service and clean
• no loading or drilling on the dome
• flexible placement around the site
• safest option in high-wind or hurricane regions
Best for clients planning full-time living, glamping, or off-grid setups.
2. Solar Panels on a Nearby Structure
Some clients install solar panels on:
• a shed or utility hut
• a small service building
• a pergola or parking cover
• an elevated platform
This keeps the panels secure and avoids structural risk.
3. Solar Panels Directly on the Dome (Not Recommended)
We do not recommend attaching solar panels to the dome itself.
Reasons:
• additional weight creates uneven load
• drilling or fastening into the frame or panels voids warranty
• wind-load risk increases dramatically
• panel shadowing reduces efficiency
• difficult access for cleaning and maintenance
• high chance of long-term damage
If you absolutely need a dome-mounted solution, you must use a non-penetrating, lightweight accessory mount approved by a licensed engineer, and you must check with us before installation.
4. Running Solar Power Into the Dome
No special dome modifications are required.
Most customers run solar power into the dome through:
• a standard conduit
• a floor penetration made by the electrician
• a mini-split line-set hole
• a vent opening (with proper sealing by your installer)
A local electrician must perform any electrical work.
5. Off-Grid Systems
Many customers pair the dome with:
• battery storage systems
• solar generators
• portable plug-and-play solar kits
These are popular for glamping, greenhouses, and outdoor studios.
Summary
- Best method: ground-mounted solar array
- Avoid attaching solar panels directly to dome
- Never drill into the frame or panels
- Use a licensed electrician for all electrical work
- We can advise on safe mounting practices if needed
