What should I do if I see condensation inside the dome?

Understanding why condensation happens and how to control it in hard-shell geodesic domes

Condensation is not a structural issue; it’s a natural moisture event that happens when warm, humid indoor air meets a cooler surface. Because Ekodomes are hard-shell structures made from aluminum, HPL, insulated SIP panels, glass, or polycarbonate, the surfaces can collect moisture when temperature swings are high or when ventilation is limited.

Here’s how to manage and prevent it.

1. Improve Ventilation

Most condensation problems disappear with proper airflow.
Good ventilation removes humid air and replaces it with drier outside air.
Recommended steps:
• open the dome’s windows or passive vents daily
• add an operable skylight or roof vent (if applicable)
• run a small exhaust fan in kitchens or bathrooms
• consider cross-ventilation when weather allows

2. Reduce Indoor Humidity

Activities like cooking, showering, drying clothes, or even breathing increase humidity.
To reduce it:
• use a dehumidifier during winter or rainy seasons
• keep bathroom doors closed and fans running
• avoid bringing wet gear or damp materials inside
• eliminate standing water or wet surfaces quickly

3. Stabilize Temperature Differences

Large temperature swings intensify condensation.
Depending on your dome type:
PRO Domes: the insulated SIP panels greatly reduce cold-surface contact
Original Hard-Shell Domes: consider adding interior insulation or soft liner materials in colder climates
Greenhouse Domes: condensation is normal and expected; ventilation is key

Maintaining a more consistent indoor temperature helps reduce moisture buildup on aluminum frames and polycarbonate surfaces.

4. Check for Areas With Limited Air Movement

Condensation often forms where air doesn’t circulate well: behind furniture, under lofts, or near the base.
Move items a few inches away from walls and panels to allow airflow.

5. Wipe and Dry When Necessary

If you notice early droplets forming after a cold night or a humid day, simply wipe them with a cloth. This prevents water from finding its way into seams or flooring.

6. For Greenhouse Domes

Condensation is normal and part of greenhouse thermodynamics.
To control excess moisture:
• open vents early in the morning
• use thermal curtains at night
• add fans to circulate air
• avoid overwatering plants
