What’s the difference between twinwall polycarbonate and solid polycarbonate panels?
Both materials are used in our Greenhouse Dome category, but they behave differently in terms of insulation, light diffusion, clarity, and impact resistance.
Twinwall and solid polycarbonate panels are both engineered for durability, UV resistance, and long-term outdoor use. We use these materials exclusively in our Greenhouse Dome category, where the Original Ekodome frame is paired with full polycarbonate glazing.
While both options are strong and weather-resistant, they serve different purposes depending on how you plan to use your greenhouse dome.
1. Structure & Composition
Twinwall Polycarbonate
• Two layers connected by internal ribs
• Creates insulating air pockets
• Lightweight yet strong
• Diffuses light naturally
• Excellent for plant health and heat retention
Solid Polycarbonate
• A single solid transparent sheet
• Heavier and more rigid
• Extremely impact-resistant (stronger than glass)
• Provides crystal-clear visibility
• Ideal where clarity matters more than insulation
2. Insulation Performance
Twinwall Polycarbonate
• Offers noticeably better insulation
• Slows heat loss due to trapped air channels
• Helps regulate interior greenhouse temperatures
• More energy-efficient for cold climates
Solid Polycarbonate
• Minimal insulation compared to twinwall
• Best for visibility, not thermal retention
• Performs more like a clear window material
3. Light Transmission
Twinwall Polycarbonate
• Soft, diffused light
• Reduces glare and hotspots
• Prevents leaf burn and uneven light exposure
• Ideal for growing environments
Solid Polycarbonate
• Provides clear, direct sunlight
• Best for viewing, observation, and scenic visibility
• Great for windows, door glazing, and panoramic sections
4. Weight & Handling
Twinwall Polycarbonate
• More lightweight
• Easier to handle during DIY installation
• Flexible and forgiving
Solid Polycarbonate
• Heavier and more rigid
• Needs more support during installation
• Extremely durable under high-impact conditions
5. Common Applications
Twinwall Polycarbonate (Recommended for most greenhouse domes)
• Full greenhouse glazing
• Overhead skylight panels
• Light-diffusing environments
• Cold-climate growing
• Any greenhouse dome where insulation matters
Solid Polycarbonate
• Clear windows on greenhouse structures
• Panoramic viewing panels
• Situations requiring maximum impact resistance
• Transparent doors or entry glazing
• Wind- or debris-prone regions
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Twinwall Polycarbonate if you want:
• Better insulation
• More stable winter greenhouse performance
• Soft, diffused natural light
• Lightweight DIY-friendly panels
• Cost-effective year-round growing
Choose Solid Polycarbonate if you need:
• Maximum clarity
• High-impact resistance
• Crystal-clear panoramic views
• Window-like transparency
• Strong performance in stormy regions
