How do I prevent leakage around the base of my Ekodome?
Understanding the correct steps, materials, and responsibilities to ensure a watertight installation at the base.
Preventing leaks around the base of an Ekodome comes down to one principle: the dome must sit on a properly built, perfectly level platform, and the base sealing must be implemented correctly. When these steps are followed, the system performs as intended.
1. Start With a Fully Level, Properly Built Platform
Water intrusion at the base is almost always caused by platform issues, not the dome. The platform must be:
• Completely level across the entire circumference
• Built with the correct diameter for your dome
• Strong enough to hold anchor bolts securely
• Finished with a clean, smooth surface (no gaps, dips, or raised seams)
If the platform is uneven or out of round, gaps will form under the base frame and can let water in. Builders must correct these conditions before assembly.
2. Install the Base Frame and Base Covers Correctly
Ekodome kits include metal base covers that finish and protect the lower perimeter of the frame.
Installers must:
• Correctly align the base frame before anchoring
• Ensure all base frame sections join tightly
• Install the metal base covers without bending or forcing them
• Confirm that no gaps remain between covers or at the seams
The tightness of these joints directly affects waterproofing.
3. Seal the Entire Perimeter With the Right Silicone
Sealing is essential and must be done both inside and outside along the entire lower perimeter.
Approved sealants include:
• DOWSIL 791
• DOWSIL 795
• Soudal Neutral-Cure Glazing Silicone
(Neutral-cure silicones only. Acidic silicones can damage aluminum and void warranty.)
Correct sealing method:
• Apply a continuous bead along the outside where the base frame meets the platform
• Seal the inside joint all the way around
• Smooth beads so there are no gaps or air pockets
• Do not mix different silicone types
• Do not skip the interior seal, it is just as important as the exterior
This step is the main line of defense against leaks at the base.
4. Check Anchors and Site Conditions
Anchoring should be done only after the frame is aligned and the base cover is fully installed.
Water pooling next to the dome will eventually find a way inside if drainage is poor.
Installers must ensure:
• Anchors are secure
• The site drains water away from the dome
• There is no standing water around the perimeter
Good site drainage is the customer's and contractor’s responsibility.
5. Do Not Modify Base Components
Contractors sometimes cut, drill, or bend parts to “make something fit.”
This must never happen.
Unapproved modifications:
• Create leak paths
• Void structural integrity
• Cancel warranty
• Remove our ability to help later
If a contractor suggests cutting or altering any piece, email us immediately.
6. Responsibilities: What’s on Us vs. What’s on Your Installer
Ekodome provides:
• An engineered base frame
• Metal base covers
• Waterproof panel/frame interfaces
• Approved sealant list
• Installation guidance
• After-sales support
Customer / contractor is responsible for:
• Building a level, correct platform
• Proper installation of base frame and base covers
• Complete perimeter sealing
• Using approved silicone products
• Ensuring adequate site drainage
• Avoiding unauthorized alterations
Leaks caused by incorrect installation, poor sealing, or platform issues are not product defects.
